“Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was one of the most prolific, materially innovative artists in the United States during the postwar period. Perhaps most well-known for his iconic chairs designed for Knoll and his use of sound as sculptural material, his output was diverse and extensive encompassing jewelry, monotypes, and thousands of unique sculptures including large-scale commissions for significant modernist architectural projects. His body of work speaks to a fluid movement across the fields of art, design, and architecture, unified by the artist’s career-long exploration of the possibilities of metal. This talk discusses the foundation and continuous importance of the material and metalworking within Bertoia’s practice, arguing that it offers an alternative view of what modernism meant at midcentury.”
