An iconic American success story, artist Harry Bertoia, sat down with interviewer Paul Cummings in the Sonambient Barn during the summer of 1972 for the Oral History Interview project of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. A selection of excerpts follows.
While Harry Bertoia is known for his monumental architectural commissions and impressive sounding sculptures, he also made countless small table top sculptures that offer magical charisma and levity.
Any household product in service for up to sixty years is going to show signs of wear and tear and that includes the robust steel wire Bertoia chairs that have been in continuous production worldwide since the first customer order shipments in 1953.
